ZIRKU AIRPORT - RUNWAY STRIP INTEGRITY Zirku Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

RW Armstrong executed a runway pavement study and rehabilitation design, runway strip analysis and design on Zirku Island - the main industrial base for processing, storage and export of oil from the Zakum fields.
Zirku Airport plays a critical role in the transportation of civilian and military personnel to and from the island. ZADCO upgraded the airport to accommodate the growth spurred by larger operations. The runway, built in 1979, showed signs of deterioration and required analysis and design for repairs or upgrades. RW Armstrong provided design services to rehabilitate the runway as well as improvements to the runway strip to meet GCAA specifications.

The major elements of the detailed design services included:
Alternatives analysis
Perform geotechnical study, PCI survey (visual pavement inspection), and pavement material testing.
Analyze the structure and condition of the runway to recommend replacement or rehabilitation as required.

Runway and Apron repairs and rehabilitation
Design runway and apron pavement rehabilitation.
Pavement profile design.
Pavement markings design.

Runway strip
Grading design for shoulders and runway strip to meet GCAA CAR Part IX compliance.
