RW Armstrong provided design services for a new helicopter apron, two new taxiways and an access roadway to the new apron of Zirku Airport on Zirku Island. Zirku Airport, built in 1979, is a private airport located 140km northwest of Abu Dhabi and plays a critical role in the transportation of civilian and military personnel to and from the island. The major elements of the detailed design services include:
Alternatives Analysis

  • Prepare and analyze three (3) alternatives for the layout of the helicopter apron and taxiways.
  • Recommend a preferred layout based on cost, safety, and operations.
  • Apron and Taxiways
  • Helicopter Apron to accommodate four (4) Bell 412 helicopters.
  • Taxiway to connect existing apron to the runway.
  • Taxiway to connect helicopter apron from the existing apron to the runway.
  • Pavement, pavement markings, grading and drainage design.
Existing Apron Expansion and New Pavement Markings
  • Expand the apron to accommodate two full Code C aircraft.
  • Access Roadway
  • Roadway to the new helicopter apron.

  • New airfield ground lighting for the taxiways and apron, including modifications as required.
